| Bokaro Steel City railway station is connected with important parts of the country like Kolkata, Durg, Coimbatore, New Delhi, Chennai, Jabalpur, Surat, Hyderabad, Alappuzha, Bilaspur, Mumbai, Nagpur, Lucknow, Guwahati, Amritsar, Raipur, Gorakhpur, Patna, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneshwar, Varanasi etc. by rail. Bokaro Steel City is the main station of the city situated 12 km from the city centre. It is under the administration of the South Eastern Railway zone of Indian Railways. All mail/express trains including Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, Garib Rath and Jan Shatabdi Express stop here. Other stations within the city limit are Radhagaon, Tupkadih, Chandrapura, Bandhdih, Chas, Ispatnagar, Telgaria. |
| The city gets its name from the Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL) which lies at the core of its economy. It’s well aided by the new steel mill Electrosteel Castings Limited and power plants like Bokaro Power Supply Corporation Private Limited, a joint venture of Damodar Valley Corporation and BSL. Some big corporates are also setting up there industries here, such as – ArcelorMittal 12ml/t steel plant, Posco 3ml/t steel plant and SAIL greenfield steel plant of 12 ml/t are coming soon around the city. In the next five Bokaro alone contribute half of the steel production of the country. Apart from steel plants there are a Jaypee Cement Plant of 2.1 ml/t and a power plant of 1000 MW is also coming up. |
| To take care of the employees working in the plant, an Occupational Health Services Centre has been provided within the plant premises. Bokaro General Hospital is recognised by the Indian Medical Council for imparting training to Housemen and Interns and also by the Nursing Council of India for training of Student Nurses. Bokaro General Hospital has the distinction of being the only one in Jharkhand being recognised by the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi as a centre for imparting post-graduate training to candidates appearing for the Diplomat of National Board examinations. The medical team has around 200 skilled doctors and over 1000 paramedic staff. |
| Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park is the biggest zoological garden in Jharkhand, was built in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It has animals and birds from different parts of the world, with the big cats being the biggest attractions. The zoo came into limelight after multiple breedings of white tigers, royal Bengal tigers, and the Asiatic lion. The cubs were sent to zoos in India and abroad, since the available resources were not good enough to cater to the needs of so many big cats. Boating is allowed in the artificial lake created within the park. There is a kids corner near the bear cage and adjacent to it is a small dam. |
| Bokaro Steel Plant main gate Bokaro Steel Plant – Bokaro Steel Plant(23.671136°N 86.104531°E) is one of the largest steel mills in the country, with an output capacity of more than five million tonnes of steel. The plant also has a power plant, now being run by Bokaro power Supply Company Ltd., a 50–50 joint venture between SAIL and DVC. The plant is undergoing a modernization program, and the increased demand for steel over the last couple of years saw all the blast furnaces in the company becoming operational together for the first time. The company has about 30000 employees on its rolls as of 2005. d. |
| ArcelorMittal Steel giant ArcelorMittal is looking to set up a 12 million tonne greenfield plant in Bokaro. The company is now looking for 8,000 acres (32 km2) of land but primarily take 2,500-acre (10 km2) of land at Petarwar/Kasmar (in Bokaro district) just 20 km from City, nearby on NH-23. The company has been allocated 32-35 million cubic meter of water to be drawn from the Tenughat dam. In another move ArcelorMittal are to use the spare land of SAIL by establishing a new steel plant of 3-4 ml/ton capacity of 50:50 JV with PSU in BSL premises itself by the investment of $2.7 billion. |
| Bokaro, the name originated from the river Bokaro in the west side of the district. Total Urban population of Bokaro Steel city including Chas, Jainamore, Industrial area(tupkadih) and realstate hub Chira Chas is near about 1000000. The urban area of City is more than 250 km2. Bokaro Steel City is the headquarters of the Bokaro district as well as Koylanchal range (Bokaro, Dhanbad and Giridih). It is also one of the three headquarters of the Police IG zone, apart from Ranchi and Dumka, covering seven districts- Hazaribagh, Dhanbad, Giridih, Koderma, Chatra, Bokaro, and Ramgarh. |
| Pupunki Ashram is the last Kasba on the Bokaro Dhanbad route. The village, with its fields and fishery ponds, is squeezed between NH-32, the Bokaro-Chandrapura railway line and the Damodar river. Opposite to the village across the NH-32 is the pious Pupunki Ashram “The Multiversity”. Established by Akhanda Mandaleshwer Sri Sri Swami Swarupananda Paramhansha Deva, popularly known as Babamani. This Ashram was a home for Gurus who used to harbour Gaushalas with hundreds of students being imparted scientific and spiritual knowledge. The place is a popular picnic spot. |
| Parasnath Hills – Parasnath Hills are a range of hills located in Giridih district of Jharkhand. The highest peak is 1350 metres. In Jainism, the Parasnath hills are referred to as Shri Sammet Shikhar Teerth (Shikharji). They are one of the two most prominent Jain pilgrimage centers, the other being Shetrunjaya, located in Gujarat state of Western India. The hill is named after Parasnath, the 23rd Tirthankara. Twenty of the twenty-four Jain Tirthankaras attained salvation on this hill. According to some, nine Tirthakaras attained salvation on this hill. |
| This remote place came into prominence when Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru planned to build the first swadeshi steel plant with the help of the Soviets. The proximity to coal, iron ore, manganese, and other raw materials had helped in the selection of this place. The steel plant was incorporated as a limited company on 24 January 1964, and was later merged with SAIL and came to be known as Bokaro Steel Limited (BSL). The late 1960s and early 1970s saw heavy construction of the steel plant as well as the township. The first blast furnace started on 2 October 1972. |
| The Sector III and Camps I and II were the first to come in the township followed by Sectors II, IX, IV and so on. The first private school came in the form of St. Xavier’s School which the Jesuits from Hazaribagh built on invitation from the BSL management. The 1980s saw rapid development of the township with new sectors, schools, parks, zoos and other public amenities. Township development ceased with the completion of IV/F and IV/G. In all Bokaro Steel City consists of 12 sectors (sectors VII and X do not exist). |
| Chas – Once a small grain trading hub of the region, this town first became famous during the Second World War when the British government used it as a base to supply soldiers fighting on the eastern front against the Japanese. After the decision of government of India to establish the Bokaro Steel Plant it gained in stature. It was the administrative headquarters of the area when Bokaro was a part of Dhanbad district, and later when Bokaro became a district. The headquarters were moved to the steel township. |
| The township has a 910-bed Bokaro General Hospital (BGH) with specialised units like Critical Care Unit, Intensive Coronary Care Unit, Haemodialysis Unit, Nuclear Medicine Laboratory, etc. The Child Care Unit of BGH has been recognised as a Baby Friendly Hospital by UNICEF. The Blood Bank of BGH has been given the status of Regional Training Centre by Government of India. It is the only blood bank in the state of Jharkhand, which gives training to blood bank officers and technicians in Jharkhand. |
| The economy of the Steel City is heavily depended on the steel plant which is the primary source of income for the employees. After the 2001 downturn, steel prices hardened due to a huge rise in consumption by China and India. This resulted in large profits by SAIL which crossed a record Rs 6000 crores (USD 1.3 Bn) by the end of FY’ 06. It has maintained its profitability since then with a slight dip to Rs 4900 crores (USD 1 Bn) in 2011 due to unfavorable economic conditions of 2011. |
| The primary economy is supported by the services sector. The city market situated at the center of the city in Sector 4 has shops selling computer hardware and has computer training institutes, making Bokaro a hub of computer studies for the region. The old Chas bazaar still remains a cheap wholesale market, and dundi baag is one of the biggest vegetable markets in the region. Besides these, each sector has its own small shopping center catering to the day to day needs of the people. |
| Bokaro Power Supply Co Pvt. Ltd. (BPSCL) came into being on 18.9.2001 under Companies Act 1956 as a part of Steel Authority Of India Limited(SAIL) Business Reconstruction and Restructuring Plan and with intent to strengthen its core business activity (i.e. steel manufacturing). SAIL has assigned its entire business as a going concern pertaining to the Capacity of steam generation 660 T/hr. of BSL by the deed of transfer and assignment of business. |

| City Centre, Bokaro is the main shopping district of the city. The difference between the market and most other major markets in Indian cities is in the ample parking space, and the wide approach and market roads. The centre has all major Indian banks, shops for clothing, electronics, and food joints. There are two cinemas – Jeetendra and Pali Plaza. The latest comers to the market are coaching institutes, small clinics, and hospitals. |
| Software Technology Park- Buoyed by the success of the software technology park (STPI) in the state capital, the government is planning to set up two more STPIs — one in Jamshedpur and the other in Bokaro. The Bokaro Industrial Area Development Authority (Biada) to make land available for the projects. It has suggested availability of land in the Balidih industrial area, where the ancillary units of Bokaro steel plant are housed. |
| As of 2011 India census, under the urban agglomeration of Bokaro Steel City had a population of 563,417 making it the 66th largest Urban agglomeration 87th largest city in India and fourth largest city in Jharkhand . Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Bokaro Steel City has an average literacy rate of 84.87%, higher than the national average of 74%, with male literacy of 93% and female literacy of 79%. |
| Formerly there was a village named Maraphari deep in the jungles of Chota Nagpur. The closest village cluster was Chas. Purulia was the closest town and the area was ruled by the Maharaja of Kashipur. Folklore has it that this area came under Mughal rule by the conquests of Man Singh. The region was named ManBhoom after him (VeerBhoom and SinghBhoom are the neighbouring regions also named after him, Veer Man Singh). |
| City Park – Bokaro has a City Park with an artificial lake and three artificial islands. These islands were designed in Japanese style. The park used to have some animals but they were transferred to the Jawaharlal Botanical Garden in the early 1990s. There is a small guest house that is used to host parties for visiting dignitaries. The park hosts an annual Basant Mela (Spring Fiesta) in early February. |
| Bokaro Steel Plant Modernisation and extend its capacity from 4.5 MT to 7.5 MT before 2011. In the same way, further plan for SAIL to extend BSL capacity to 17 MT before 2020. Apart from this a SAIL Greenfield steel plant is planned to set up before 2015, capacity of 5 MT. So before 2020 BSL total capacity goes up to 22 MT, approximately double the present capacity (13 MT) of SAIL all Steel Plants. |
| Garga Dam is located around 12 km from the city centre, Near to railway station on the NH-23. It is a picnic spot for the citizens of Bokaro. The green surroundings and variety of aquatic habitat residing in and around Garga Dam lures school excursions and biological expeditions to the area The dam is constructed for the use of the steel plants as well as for a water supply for the people. |
| Kali Mandir, located in Sector-8, is one of the oldest temples of the city. As the name suggests, the temple is dedicated to one of the incarnations of Shakti, Goddess Kali. Besides the religious activities it is also a major socializing place for the Bengalis of the city. The temple organizes an annual painting competition attended by hundreds of students from the schools of the city. |
| The primary economy is supplemented by BIADA governing four districts Bokaro, Dhanbad, Giridih and Koderma situated in Balidih area of Bokaro beside NH-23. It has a wide manufacturing environment having more than 170 square k.m and constitutes more than 500 S.S.I and large manufacturing enterprises. It manufactures a lot of industrial components for small and medium scale industries. |
| City park Bokaro Ram Mandir, located in the Sector-1/C, is the most famous mandir dedicated to Lord Ram and smaller other mandirs encircling it dedicated to other gods and goddesses. The Ram Mandir market is known for its coffee house, batata poori, chat, samosa, phuchka and egg-rolls. Ram Mandir houses one of the oldest markets of Bokaro. The airport is 1 km from Ram Mandir. |
| Steel cities of Bokaro will soon figure on the country’s air map as the Airports Authority of India will set up new airports there.A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by the AAI and the Jharkhand government for establishing airports in both the cities(Bokaro & Jamshedpur) in the presence of AAI chairman and Jharkhand chief minister Arjun Munda. |
| Rajrappa is a tourist place and is famous for the ‘Chinnamasta Temple’ which is situated on the bank of the confluence of the rivers Bhairavi and Damodar. The temple is nestled amidst dense greenery eight kilometres from the Colony. The place gets its name from the temple which is known as ‘Rajrappa Mandir’. Rajrappa is 60 km from the Bokaro Steel City. |
| Bokaro Steel City airport is used only by private carriers of Sail and dignitaries,. The Steel City is all set to figure in the commercial flight map soon, with Kingfisher Airlines initiating the process to launch its flights between Bokaro and Kolkata. Bokaro Steel Limited has expressed its readiness to allow the use of its airport for the purpose. |
| Naya More is the main bus terminal. The bus stand is divided into platforms for private buses. A Government Bus Terminal is just adjacent to the main bus terminal. Besides Naya More there are two more bus terminals, Basanti More in Sector-9 and Dharamshala more in Chas. Regular Volvo bus services from the city centre and Naya More are available. |
| The late 1990s saw sprucing up of the City Park and creation of islands, new schools and the success of Bokaro’s students in all India level competition exams, specially IITs. During this period Bokaro also emerged as the eastern hub for academics. Bokaro has a cosmopolitan culture as the population consists of people from all parts of India. |
| It is located in picturesque surroundings on the southern bank of river Damodar with Garga, one of its tributaries meandering along the southern and eastern outskirts of the city. | A Kolkata based water pipe manufacturer acquired 2,500 acres (10 km2) of land 18 km from the city and has started its erection of its 2.2 MTPA steel plant. | Besides the steel plant, Bokaro is also known for what the students from the city have achieved over the years. The city also boasts of very large expatriate population in US, UAE, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. In fact during 90’s and early 2000s Bokaro used to have more than 100 students clearing IIT JEE every year. |
| SAIL-POSCO JV Steel Plant steel minister Sri Virbhadra Singh has announced another new steel plant for Bokaro as part of a joint venture with Posco and SAIL by using FINEX technologies for high quality steel. The capacity of the plant will be 1.5 mt, establish in BSP periphery of 500 acres (2.0 km2). |
| The Bokaro administration has taken a step to turn Bokaro into a shopping hub for the region. An anti-encroachment drive has been launched in the steel city to make way for malls and multiplexes. The BSL administration has prepared a blueprint to develop shopping destinations and multiple-screen theaters. |
| The Bokaro Club and Sports Complex is situated in Sec.5 and Sec.4 respectively, with facilities for indoor sports like table tennis, badminton, chess, billiards as well as for sports such as swimming and tennis. Coaches are available for volleyball, basketball, handball, table tennis, kabaddi and khokho. |
| Sai Baba Sansthan is located in Sector – 6 near the TV tower. Daily aartis at morning 5.30 Kakar Aarti, 6.30 Abhishek Aarti, 12.00 Noon Dhoop Aarti, at evening 6.00 p.m. Sandhya Aarti and 9.00 pm Shez Aarti are performed. A special aarti is performed every Thursday 8.00 p.m. |
| Tata Steel- Tata Steel wants to set up a steel plant with a capacity of 2-3 million tonnes at an investment of up to Rs. 14,000 crore in Bokaro along with SAIL. The jointly owned plant is proposed to come up on a 1,000-acre (4.0 km2) plot of land that belongs to SAIL. |
| The Senapati Cricket Stadium is situated behind the Mohankumar Mangalam Stadium, in front of the Bokaro Library. It has hosted some Ranji Cup and state level matches. The base camp for the National Women Cricket team was organized at the stadium. It is managed by BSL. |
| Private cars and taxi facilities are available everywhere in the city. Other transport is trekkers, autos, rickshaws and mini buses. The city boasts of one of the most well maintained roads in the whole state as maintenance is under the authority of the Steel Plant. |
| Bokaro Ispat Pustakalaya, located near Bokaro Hotel, has a collection of over 40,000 books (including some valuable manuscripts) that meets the reading requirements of the people in the township. It is managed by the management of the steel plant. |
| Monnet Ispat & Energy Ltd Monnet, which signed an MoU on February 5, 2003, has identified 1,300 acres (5.3 km2) for its project. Monnet Ispat will invest over Rs 14,000 crore for the project and is also building a 280-mW power plant. |
| The SAIL Football Academy nourishes football from school level and provides free education to students who perform well in football. Bokaro school teams participate every year in Subroto Cup and have emerged as winners on many occasions. |
| Gayatri Mandir is located in Sector-9/A. People visit the place during the morning and evening for the daily prayer. Navmi puja at Gayatri mandir is also famous. Khichri is distributed as the prasad on the occasion of Navmi puja. |
| Bokaro Jaypee Cement Limited (BOJCL), the second joint venture between the Jaypee group and SAIL with management control vested in the Company, is incorporated to set up a 2.1 MTPA capacity cement plant at Bokaro Steel City. |
| Two cooling ponds have been built for use in steel making. A dam on river Garga has been built to supply water to the township as well as the steel plant, but due to ever increasing demand Tenughat dam is supplementing it. |
| The Trainees Hostel Ground accommodates local and guest players. The lodging facility is provided by Trainees hostel No.1 and No.2. Hostel 1 provides a facility for sporting events such as weightlifting, and basketball. |
| The Railway Stadium is situated near Bokaro station in the Balidih area. It is managed by Indian Railways and hosts athletics and football. Accommodation facilities for the players is provided at a nearby hostel. |
| Jagannath Temple, located in Sector-4, is a newly built temple. The temple is a replica of the famous temple in Puri, Orissa. The rath yatra is celebrated here very beautifully. It is also a sight for visiting. |
| Bokaro Sangeet Kala Academy in Sector-4(beside YMCA) offers learning opportunities in fine art, especially classical music. The students also get opportunities to showcase their talent and training. |
